Known mostly for the mesmerizing aurora borealis, Fairbanks is more than just a winter tourist destination. It’s just the right place for anyone wanting to escape the big city and enjoy a breather.

This Alaskan city offers incredible scenery and plenty of activities year-round. It’s even kept people interested during COVID-19 — a recent study by apartment search website RENTCafé named Fairbanks the most resilient small town destination. In fact, it had the highest number of Google searches during the pandemic.

Traveling might not be safe just yet, but that doesn’t mean we can’t plan ahead and find out what the fuss is all about in Fairbanks. Without further ado, here are the top 10 attractions to see when in Fairbanks (in no particular order):

1. Northern Lights & Aurora Ice Museum

There’s really no way you could visit Fairbanks and not try to see the northern lights. While you might catch them if you drive from Fairbanks to the Arctic Circle, that’s not a given. So, instead, visit the Aurora Ice Museum, the world’s largest year-round ice environment.

It’s abundant in ice sculptures and even igloos and entire rooms made of ice. But, the most exciting part is that they’re all lit up with ice chandeliers that mimic the aurora borealis colors, hence the name.

2. Yukon River Lodge

The world-famous Yukon River should also be at the top of your list. Explore the area’s wilderness and stand in awe of the wildlife and beautiful hot springs. The Lodge is located halfway between Fairbanks and Nome, but it’s definitely worth the trip.

3. Georgeson Botanical Garden

See some of the most beautiful plants, from peonies and lilacs to dahlias and daylilies at this lovely botanical garden. While you’re there, you could also choose to walk around an entire rose garden — there’s even one full of edibles. It’s the perfect place to visit when you want a bit of relaxation and just to be around nature.

4. Chena Hot Springs

Although technically not in Fairbanks, Chena Hot Springs — a 60-mile drive away — is definitely a must-see. Discovered in the early 1900s, the springs are a favorite among tourists. Not only do they make for a nice view, but there are also plenty of activities available, including hiking, a geothermal plant and horseback tours.

5. World Eskimo-Indian Games

If you happen to visit Fairbanks in July, don’t miss this four-day event. It’s based on traditional games that require survival skills ranging from contestants carrying weights to using their knuckles to hop forward. In addition to sports, there’s also traditional dancing, as well.

6. Reindeer Ranch

Have you ever wanted to see an actual reindeer? Well, here’s your chance. Meet one and go on a walk with them in the woods, after which you can enjoy a nice little cup of hot cocoa and cookies while you learn about these lovely animals. There aren’t many places in the U.S. where you can see reindeers in person, so go ahead and book that trip.

7. Fountainhead Antique Auto Museum

Here’s another great place you can visit all year round. With a collection of more than 85 cars, the museum has some of the most impressive vehicles dating as far back as 1930. A few are even one of a kind. While being a car enthusiast is not a prerequisite to enjoy the collection, those who are will probably be amazed to see all types of cars, from speedsters and electric cars to steam cars and horseless carriages.

8. Angel Rocks Trail

Located in the Chena River State Recreation Area, this lovely trail is perfect for hiking and running. It offers some of the most scenic cliff views you’ve ever seen and boasts unique geologic formations reaching a height of almost 1,750 feet. Plus, there’s also a resort where you can admire the Alaska Range, the Chena Dome and Bear Paw Butte in all their splendor.

9. HooDoo Brewing Company

A nice glass of beer goes perfectly with some great views. Since 2011, this brewery has offered beers brewed in the classic European and American style. Flavors include the popular Citra Pale Ale, American IPA and Belgian Saison.

10. Denali National Park

Only two hours from Fairbanks, the park is absolutely gorgeous and just perfect for biking, backpacking, mountaineering, camping in the warmer months, or just hiking. Wildlife here includes moose, grizzly bears, wolves, and even caribou, so you’re sure to catch sight of any of these when you visit.
