4 places you absolutely must visit in Florence, Italy

Undoubtedly one of the most picturesque cities in the whole of Italy, Florence holds a special place in the hearts of locals and visitors. It’s a beautiful mecca of museums, stunning architecture, and endless beautiful sights that cannot be missed.

Of course, it being such a tourist hotspot, you might be worried about the expense of it all. However, there are also plenty of attractions that don’t cost a single cent. Here are just a few that deserve a spot on your must-do list.

Piazza Santa Croce

One of the liveliest piazzas in the city, Piazza Santa Croce is located (unsurprisingly) in the Santa Croce neighborhood. Here you can feel the energy and distinct personality of the city with the quaint little bars and side streets that are bustling with shoppers and local coffee shops.

Of course, no piazza is complete without an impressive monument. Home to one of the most majestic basilicas in the city, take it in its celestial grandeur from the outside and venture in at a small fee. And keep an eye out for the Dante Alighieri statue!

Piazzale Michelangelo

Boasting panoramic views over the city, Piazzale Michelangelo requires you to leave the main city behind. But it’s so worth it! Just a 30-minute walk or joining on a cycling tour out of the city, there’s a bit of an uphill walk to reach this incredible viewpoint.

Make it even more special by timing your arrival for sunset. There are simply no words to describe the beauty before your eyes as the historic city momentarily becomes backlit by a fiery orange glow.

Florence’s Gardens

Florence is also famous for its immaculate gardens, many of which are free to enter. If you want to make the most of your excursion to Piazzale Michelangelo, the rose garden located next to the Piazzale is a visual feast. Come in April and May to witness the 350 rose species in full bloom. Later in the summer, you’ll be treated to lemon trees dispersed amongst various sculptures.

Bardini Garden is another spot that often gets overlooked. With unbeatable views over Florence, as well as thousands of lilac wisterias in full bloom, just make sure to head over on the first Sunday of the month when the garden is free to enter. And don’t forget to get a snap of yourself in the famous Wisteria tunnel!

Find Mercato Nuovo

For the superstitious amongst you, you’re going to want to reap all the good luck associated with finding Mercato Nuovo. Located at the Loggia del Mercato Nuovo, you’ll find a majestic bull statue. Simply give it an energetic rub for a welcome dose of good luck!
